What can Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy treat

Clinical trials, that provide the evidence base, have shown that Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy can be successful in treating a variety of painful tendonopathies and Orthopaedic problems in all age groups for treatment of conditions affecting the upper limbs, knee, ankle and foot. Many patients will have had medical intervention in the form of injected steroids and physical therapy, which has failed in the treatment of chronic conditions, such as calcified tendons, in the joints mentioned above. These patients are particularly eligible for Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is the latest technology in treating tendonious injuries, such as,

  • plantar fasciitis
  • Achiles tendonitis
  • anterior tibial syndrome
  • jumpers knee (knee pain)
  • greater trochanteric pain syndrome (painful hip)
  • proximal hamstring injury
  • Golfers elbow
  • Tennis elbow
  • shoulder injury / pain

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy?

The device passes shockwaves (mechanical, not electrical) through the skin to the injured part of the body. The impulses spread inside the injured part of the body as an aspherical radial wave, this initiates an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue that is being treated. This prompts the body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation, which accelerates the body's natural healing process by increasing cell generation and dissolving calcium deposits.
